Mollie and the Battle of Cowshed

Mollie, in Animal Farm, is a pretty white mare, who was used to pull Mr. Jones's carriage. Mollie is a pleasure loving animal and loves being groomed and pampered. She also likes to make herself more beautiful than she actually is by decorating herself with colorful ribbons. After the rebellion, Mollie had a difficult time to deal with because of the hard work and extra labor every animal was forced to do. Mollie, wasn't good at getting up early in the mornings and left work early by giving lame excuses. These evidences are enough for us to refer to Mollie as a foolish, lazy, and pleasure seeking animal who is always busy in finding her own benefit on others' efforts.

The Battle of the Cowshed, occurs in Chapter IV, when on October the 12th Jones and all his men, with half a dozen others from Pinchfield and Foxwood try to recapture the farm. As the battle starts and the fires are shot by Mr Jones and his army. Mollie hides foolishly, with her face under the haystack in the manger. On one hand, the animals are risking their lives for the safety of Animal Farm and are giving their best to protect the farm from Mr Jones's army, where as, on the other hand, Mollie is hiding face down in the manger apart from all the danger that the other animals are facing.

Although, Mollie didn't contribute to the battle, but the animals are able to win it. After their triumphant, the animals are shocked when Mollie is nowhere to be found. They thought that the humans must have harmed her and started looking for her. After some inspection, they found her hiding in the manger.

Mollie's actions at the Battle of Cowshed are not justifiable because she expresses fear and only thinks of her own benefit. She is afraid of killing and being killed. She doesn't contribute to the Farm's benefit. Thus, her actions are not legitimate and she should be punished for what she has done.
